What is the Strong Schools Grant Program?

Colonial Life is committed to building a foundation for our children's future by supporting educational systems and the families they serve. An important part of this relationship is the Colonial Life Strong Schools Grant Program which provides financial support for effective and creative initiatives with specific emphasis on the Three Domains outlined in the Profile of the SC Graduate. We're pleased to offer the Colonial Life Strong Schools Grant Program in partnership with Lexington County School District Two and United Way of the Midlands.

Criteria

The purpose of the Colonial Life Strong Schools Grant Program is to provide educators in Lexington County School District Two an opportunity to receive financial support for effective and creative initiatives to enhance the learning experience that would otherwise be unavailable through the school budget. Mini-grants will be awarded for up to $1,000 for innovative classroom projects and lessons with a focus on the Three Domains outlined in the Profile of the SC Graduate. All certified staff for grades CD-4-12 are eligible to apply. Project completion and reporting must occur before June 5, 2020. To view the grading matrix click here.

The awards will be based on the following criteria:

  • Improving student achievement and success
  • Infusing engaging concepts that address world class knowledge, world class skills, and Life and Career characteristics
  • Incorporating hands-on/project-based learning outcomes
  • Encouraging student inquiry, discovery, and critical thinking
  • Incorporating measurable outcomes
  • Ensuring adaptability for use by other educators

Application process

Educators may apply for mini-grants to enhance student learning and success during the 2019/2020 school year. All granted funds must be expensed prior to June 5, 2020. Any remaining grant funds after this date will not carry forward to the following academic year.

Educators may request up to $1,000 to fund an innovative project.

All proposed projects must support course content and should include measurable outcomes detailing how students will benefit from the project.

Funds may be used to purchase equipment and/or technology as a classroom tool when integrated into a lesson plan. Funds may also be used towards field trip expenses when the trip is a supplement to the project lesson for expeditionary learning. Funds may not be used to pay for guest speakers, professional development activities, office supplies, capital improvements, or playground equipment.

All grant recipients will be required to provide to Colonial Life a mid-year project status update by Dec. 13, 2019 and a final project impact summary and lesson plan by June 5, 2020. Photos of grant recipient and class participating in the project are encouraged to be shared with Colonial Life staff.

Educators are limited to one grant application per year. Multiple requests from the same requestor will not be considered and may disqualify the applicant from consideration.

Team applications are encouraged and will be given priority consideration of duplicate requests for the same project within the same school. If awarded, team applicants will share the total grant amount.

Applications must be received before midnight on Monday, May 6, 2019 to be eligible for grant funding consideration.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Submission of an application DOES NOT guarantee grant funding.

Previous Colonial Life Strong Schools Grant recipients are eligible to apply for funding and will be given consideration, provided the year-end summary form and lesson plan were completed and submitted by the requested deadline.
